Canet pine grove

El pinar de Canet

Esporles is an area of rural estates which have defined its geography and the local landscape. Between Miralles and Son Simonet estates lies a cool, shady stretch of land called Canet pine grove. Although pines prevail, there are also fallow fields and olive groves. They are modest, unpretentious stretches of land that encapsulate the character of outlying areas of Esporles quite well. Hence, this is a route for enjoying a varied setting and an area with a rich past.

Amid fallow fields and estates

The route starts at kilometre 3.18 of the Ma-1120 road. The first part crosses Sant Pere torrent, close to Font d’en Baster spring. On the left stand the buildings of Miralles, a large old estate dating back to 1851, owned by Maria Beatriu d’Oms y Torrella.  The path continues along the side of a little torrent, passing Es Garrigó and a property called Sa Miranda. When it reaches an intersection, continue straight ahead along a narrow path.

It then travels up a slope, followed later by a cobbled section flanked by old drystone terrace walls. At the end, it comes out by a well. Turn right here and walk up a ramp to a new intersection. The path then runs alongside an olive grove to a hilltop with a gate, where there are striking views of the steep face of Moleta de Son Cabaspre (593m).

The path winds down to a tarmac track, where you should turn left. When you reach Font de sa Guixera, a spring that runs through a covered gallery beside the track, there are lovely views of Esporles. A little further on, you pass Son Simonet estate buildings, whose architecture stands out for its double arch. In 1677, this estate was valued as being worth 15,000 Mallorcan pounds.

The path swiftly descends. When it reaches an intersection, turn left and continue walking down until you reach Son Cabaspre or Na Sastre torrent, where you should cross the bridge. Take Carrer Mateu Font and Carrer Nou de Sant Pere and you will reach the little square in front of the town hall called Plaça des Jardinet.
